Xfce to n00bs yet undecided on exactly which WindowManager they need.NetworkManager seems to be very temperamental, if you do use that Gnome bloatware!
grub rescue btrfs ubuntu
to play more seriously with yet another distro, i needed to install it. so i had some fun resizing/moving partitions around to clear some freespace for a new partition. during this, the partition numbering changed.
now i can't boot ubuntu's btrfs partition. i didn't understand why, till i discovered that partition numbers are hardcoded into the grub boot record.. even though grub cfg contains only labels or uuids. tsk tsk! yet another reason why i seem to be going off grub2 bloatware.

While I was in Germany over Christmas/NY spending time with some family I hadn't seen in a few years, I offered to help them with their computer woes. My tactic was to wipe out windows and replace it with ubuntu netbook remix. Though, my preferred flavour is debian, I opted for ubuntu as I was not conversant with that hardware. Ubuntu detected everything cleanly.

I have had a long standing on-off relationship with debian going back to the potato years. I had tried many distros, but for whatever reason kept coming back to debian eventually. I have revived that affair again, and I must say I like it. I don't know, if it is due to my familiarity with this distro. I tried ubuntu for a few days, and came back to debian very quickly. Ubuntu is bloatware and targetting at n00bs. I've possibly gone past that stage, and I probably know what I want and don't. I'm still not an expert yet, but I'm getting there...
